As his adventure game returns after 40 years, JRPG icon and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii ponders making another: “It would be fun to investigate a murder case while interacting with AI”

Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii’s early work in adventure games still calls to him all these years later. With one of his earliest games, The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case, receiving a Japan-only exclusive remake this week some 40 years later, Horii has been thinking about the possibility of making a new adventure game. In an interview with Sankei News (translated by Automaton), Horii discussed his interest in making “games where players can converse with AI.” This notion has him thinking about “various possibilities in the future” for new adventure games. While Horii hasn’t revisited the old-school style of adventure game he made in the ’80s since he began his work on the Dragon Quest series, it sounds like the remake of The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case has some new ideas swirling around in his head. “Technology is now able to distinguish words spoken in real life, which means that players don’t have to search for words that the computer can recognize,” he sai…

Indie dev horrified to realize their protagonist is coded as Lois Griffin from Family Guy: “Nobody told me … I worked 3 years on this game”

Look, we all draw inspirations from different places – maybe even subconsciously – whether that’s a formative piece of media, a shared experience, or even an episode of Family Guy. The developer of Caravan SandWitch had a horrifying realization on Twitter that the main character Sauge’s color scheme resembles Lois Griffin from Family Guy, an unintentional design decision. The developer took to Twitter to point out the striking resemblance, “Why nobody told me Sauge’s color scheme is the same as Lois Griffin, I worked 3 years on this game.” WHY NOBODY TOLD ME SAUGE’S COLOR SHEME IS THE SAME AS LOIS GRIFFIN I WORKED 3 YEARS ON THIS GAMEEEE pic.twitter.com/cwvyIzhpqpSeptember 9, 2024After looking at the image, the comparison is apt. Sauge is unfortunately very Lois Griffin-coded. The vibrant teal jacket and orange bob haircut aren’t doing the comparisons any favors. Peter Griffin joined the never-ending cast of Fortnite characters, so maybe it’s time for his wife Lois to get into the …

The roguelike that was Balatro’s “largest influence” has had its own “minor sales spike” thanks to the hit indie’s upcoming mobile release

Indie roguelike hit Balatro is set to jeopardize world productivity later this month when it launches on mobile devices, but it turns out its upcoming launch has caused a sales spike for a completely separate game.Luck be a Landlord, which was developed by indie dev Dan DiIorio (TrampolineTales), is a roguelike deckbuilder which sees players use an in-game slot machine “to earn rent money and defeat capitalism,” adding new symbols to the machine as they go in the hopes of earning more and more coins. Its gameplay is by no means the same as Balatro’s, which is inspired by the card game Big Two and lets you deploy all sorts of wacky cards with special abilities to earn a ridiculous amount of points, but the Google Play Store certainly thinks the two are similar enough for DiIorio’s game to show up when you search for LocalThunk’s.”So many people have searched for Balatro on Google Play that it caused Luck be a Landlord to have a minor sales spike from people finding it in the suggested s…

Larian reminds Baldur’s Gate 3 fans that Patch 7 isn’t the RPG’s final update, but it’s not saying anything else yet: “The chefs must cook”

Now that the long-awaited Patch 7 has finally come to Baldur’s Gate 3, players are curious about the RPG’s future – and Larian Studios is here to remind the community that there’s still more to come.Patch 7 features a variety of changes and exciting new content. From fresh endings for Dark Urge Tavs to integrated mod support, the patch seems to have it all and then some. But Larian said in July that the update wouldn’t be the RPG’s final patch, and is now reassuring fans it’s still got plans.”Good news kids,” writes publishing director Michael “Cromwelp” Douse in a post. “It’s not the final update.” He doesn’t specify what’s arriving in any future patches, however. “We ain’t gonna talk about what’s coming for the game because it puts undue pressure on the devs, but there are things we’ve said we’ll do that are still coming, and the chefs must cook.” Thankfully, at least some of the upcoming content isn’t actually all that mysterious. We ain’t gonna talk abo…

Star Wars Outlaws director agrees the early instant-fail stealth missions are “incredibly punishing,” and Ubisoft is easing the pain with a patch coming “maybe in 10 days”

Difficulty spikes in video games are nothing new, but in the case of Star Wars Outlaws early missions they are a bit too punishing – even for the developer’s taste. However, the developers at Ubisoft Massive can “see through data” some elements that are not working as intended. We asked creative director Julian Gerighty about the game’s controversial instant-fail stealth missions. “So especially, I mean, you’re probably thinking of one of the early missions in Mirogana, which is incredibly punishing,” Gerighty tells GamesRadar+. “And for me, that is a mistake, and this is something that we’re going to work on improving.” He goes on to say “I don’t think it means removing the fail state completely, but I do think there are millions of low hanging fruits where we can make it so much more enjoyable and understandable.”Difficulty comes in all forms, and Gerighty wants to create a “sort of tension” in these moments. However, things are currently not tuned how the team intended. Gerighty tell…

Cozy shop management RPG “inspired by Kiki’s Delivery Service, Persona 5, and Paris” is absolutely killing it on Kickstarter

The Witch’s Bakery is a shop-management RPG that’s pulling inspiration from all the right places – or at least all the places that have me very excited – and no surprise, it’s already killing it on Kickstarter so far.The Witch’s Bakery’s name pretty much says it all. You play as a witch. You run a bakery. You also have a pink, magical cat. Oh, and the bakery’s in modern day Paris. The game is split between running the shop by day, which consists of bread making minigames and decorating, and then exploring the city by night to make friends or chill. The trailer down below shows off both states, alongside a wonderful 2D art style.

Over on Twitter, developer Sunny Labs Games explained that the game was “inspired by Kiki’s Delivery Service, Persona 5, and Paris.” You can definitely see that on display in The Witch’s Bakery’s social links and broomstick misadventures, and that winning combination attracted almost 2,00…

Days Gone studio celebrates its cameo in “masterpiece” platformer Astro Bot, but one former developer says it’s a sad “way to protect your legacy”

One of the many PlayStation games to cameo in the hot new platformer on the block Astro Bot is Days Gone, though how neat that is seemingly differs depending on which of the game’s developers you ask.”Astro Bot is a masterpiece!” says Bend Studio community manager Kevin McAllister. “Such a well-designed, creative, and polished experience that brings me so much joy. Thank you again, Team Asobi, for including Days Gone into your wonderful game. Our team is incredibly honored. Please go play it and say hi to Deacon for me.”McAllister’s sentiment echos that of the official Bend Studio account, though not so much Days Gone’s now departed director and writer John Garvin.”Kinda sad that Deek has been reduced to promoting other games … well done Bend Studio! Way to protect your legacy!” he says before a back-and-forth with several fans, including the following response to one telling him to calm down: “I see my character reduced to a cartoon schill promoting some small game and I’…
